A relatively small economy, New Caledonia has around 11% of the world’s nickel reserves, making this its main export.1
Almost 15% of New Caledonia’s GDP comes from financial support from France, which is only mitigated slightly by its tourism industry. 1
New Caledonia’s economy is largely affected by fluctuations in the price of nickel, which have been declining since 2016.1
New Caledonian franc Historical Exchange Rate
The CFP franc tends to stay relatively stable due to its fixed exchange rate with the euro. This fixed rate has been 1,000 XPF = 8.38 EUR since 1999.2 Despite this the biggest fluctuations occurred between 2008 and 2012 when on the 24 December 2008, at its strongest, 1 AUD would buy only buy 58.17 CFP francs. In comparison come the 12 August 2012, 1 AUD would get you almost double the amount of CFP francs – 102.69.3
2018 has been a relatively stable year so far for the XPF, with 1 Australian dollar buying around 77.61795 XPF in June; while come 25 October, the AUD is currently buying 74.01254 XPF.3
