The Argentine Peso is the official currency of Argentina. It is identified by the same dollar symbol as with Australian and the USA, although the exchange rate is independent from these locations. Each peso is subdivided into 100 centavos.

The term ‘Peso’ is derived from Spanish origins, meaning ‘weight’ and the term can be traced back to the colonial times to refer to the Spanish coin, equivalent to a value of eight reales. The peso form a part of the national currencies in most South American countries including Chile, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Uruguay as well as Cuba and Philippines.

Between June 15th, 1985 and December 31st 1991, the official currency of Argentina was the Argentine Austral. This Peso was reintroduced to increase stability in the economy at the time due to the Austral experiencing hyperinflation.
