The official currency in South Korea is the won; which is issued by The Bank of Korea. 1 Won is divided into 100 jeon; although the jeon is no longer used for regular transactions.
The won in its current form has been used in South Korea since 1962, and officially replaced the previously-used hwan in 1975.
The ‘won’ has been used throughout several periods of Korean history, with the ‘old won’ referring to a cognate of the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan used in Korea prior to 1910.
One of the historic hot-spots that South Korea has to offer, Bukchon Hanok historic village, dates back more than 500 years to the Joseon Dynasty. Narrow streets service a variety of ancient homes, teahouses and pagoda-roofed guesthouses of old Korea.
Jeju Island
Jeju is affectionately known by locals as the ‘Island of the Gods’ for good reason. One of the most romantic places to visit in South Korea, Jeju sits among lush forested scenery boasting stunning shores, an immersive local culture and astonishing lava tubes.
Boseong
If it’s breath-taking scenery you’re after, Boseong will not disappoint. Hills upon hills of green tea fields sprawl endlessly throughout this area known as the tea capital of South Korea. Tea culture is strong here with many delicacies to try, including green tea pork belly and ice cream.
