The official currency in South Korea is the won; which is issued by The Bank of Korea. 1 Won is divided into 100 jeon; although the jeon is no longer used for regular transactions.
The won in its current form has been used in South Korea since 1962, and officially replaced the previously-used hwan in 1975.
The ‘won’ has been used throughout several periods of Korean history, with the ‘old won’ referring to a cognate of the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan used in Korea prior to 1910.
