New Zealand’s new dollars

The New Zealand dollar (NZD) has been the official currency of the country since 1967 and is among the 10 most exchanged currencies in the world. As with other dollar systems, there are 100 cents to each dollar. Many items will be priced in cents as well as dollars, so keep a supply of 10, 20 and 50 cent coins to hand.

Tipping is not compulsory here, so don’t worry about leaving a percentage of your bill unless your service was truly exceptional.

Frequently used banknotes

The notes currently in circulation are for the value of 5 (orange), 10 (blue), 20 (green), 50 (purple) and 100 (red). Each banknote features the image of a bird that is native to the country, as well as a notable New Zealander (or, in the case of the 20 dollar note, Queen Elizabeth II).

Very easy and straight forward

Very easy and straight forward. I was also very pleased to receive a wide range of USD with lots of smaller denominations which was great.

Can't order demoninations required

Inability to order denominations of choice is a major drawback. Especially when you have $2000 and need small denominations due to tour requirements. Thankfully I was able to go to my local Travelex office and break down all the $100's that were sent to me. Local staff were great thus the four stars, otherwise I would say it was three stars. Online ordering was fairly straight forward, but had to pay by BPay as they want to charge credit card surcharge. No option to pay by PayPal. Better rates than the banks, so that is definitely a positive.

Easy transaction and a good rate

Easy transaction and a good rate. The only reason Five stars weren't awarded, is that not all currencies are available online.

My experience was alot easier and better than expected! My only issue was that my delivery was …

My only issue was that my delivery was happening via Australia Post and when I ordered my money I was given a date 5 business days in advance as earliest available. I received no further correspondence. I was expecting an email or sms to advise that my order had arrived. On the due date I rang and received lovely service, although I was told that my order had been at the post office for a quite a number of days, including a weekend. The operator blamed Aus Post and when I spoke with Aus Post regarding this they blamed Travelex. If it wasn't for this issue, it was an almost perfect transaction except I did not add my middle name to the order and my middle name was on my drivers licence, so that was lesson learned on my part. Thank you
