The official currency in Oman is the rial which is abbreviated to the currency code OMR. The Omani rial is the 3rd highest valued currency in the world and was introduced in 1973.
Before 1940 the Indian rupee and the Maria Theresa thaler were the main currencies that circulated within Muscat and Oman.
The Central Bank of Oman has been issuing the rial since 1977.
The most commonly-used bills for rial are the 100 baisa and the ½, 1, 5, 10, 20 & 50 rial notes; and 1 rial is subdivided into 1000 baisa.

Why is the OMR currency so valuable?
One reason for the strength of the OMR is that it is pegged to the USD. 1 Rial has been worth 2.60 USD since 1986. The reason for the peg is that oil is valued in USD and Oman produces vast amounts of oil.
