The official currency used in East Timor is the US dollar. The decision to adopt the USD was made by the National Consultative Council (NCC) because it was seen as a strong and stable currency, widely accepted around the world.
Before adopting the US dollar as its official currency, several currencies were formerly circulated in East Timor including the Australian dollar, Indonesian rupiah, Portuguese escudo and Thai baht.
The most commonly used notes for USD in East Timor are the 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100.
East Timor’s largest city is hardly a sprawling metropolis, favouring the laidback lifestyle of a beach adorned town with some delicious dining experiences and great textile markets. Check out the Christo Rei statue or enjoy a coconut on the beach in style.
Village of Moubisse
Possibly East Timor’s most popular holiday destination, Moubisse is a great place to visit and stay if you’re planning on hiking to Mt. Ramelau. The village’s only hotel, Pousada de Maubisse, offers some great views and remains in a 1950’s time warp.
Areia Branca Beach
The crystal clear waters of Areia Branca Beach will beckon you in with their tranquil beauty and peaceful surrounding mountains. Grab a snack on your way down from the nearby fruit and vegie market and take in the wonders of the foreshore, the Christo Rei and a quirky beachside graveyard.
