The official currency of Vanuatu is the vatu, and uses the currency code VUV. Interestingly unlike many other currencies, the vatu has no subdivisions, with 1 vatu being the smallest denomination of Vanuatu currency.

The vatu was introduced one year into Vanuatu’s independence, in 1981. The vatu replaced the formerly used New Hebrides franc and ended the official circulation of the Australian dollar in Vanuatu.

Many communities in Vanuatu continue to conduct business in a ceremonial fashion, paying each other using traditional items of value such as pigs, curved boars’ tusks or long dyed mats.

Must-See Places in Vanuatu

*
  • Port Vila
  • Port Vila is Vanuatu’s capital and most lively town, featuring beautiful beaches, exciting waterside activities, French inspired restaurants and vibrant market stalls selling local wares. Drop into the nearby Mele cascades to swim in a plunge pool beneath a 35m waterfall for an amazing experience.
*
  • Luganville
  • Luganville might not be the most picturesque town in Vanuatu but it does offer access to some truly wonderful local sites. Trek through the jungle over bamboo bridges and creeks to reach the luminous Millennium Cave or dive into an American military dumping spot at Million Dollar Point.
*
  • Tanna Island
  • A truer reflection of Vanuatu’s culture lies within the local villages of Tanna Island. Visit the active volcano Mount Yasur, relax in the local hot springs or take a dive in one of the freshwater lakes or beaches that this island has to offer.

Efficient online service which I use every time. But I would like to select the denominations I require eg for Africa I need small denominations in US$ but received mostly $50’s and a small number of $20’s. I’ve had to go to another Travelex larger branch to change some notes.
