The official currency in French Polynesia is the CFP franc; 1 franc is subdivided into 100 centimes.
The CFP franc is used in all three of the French overseas collectivities; French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna. ‘CFP’ stands for ‘Change Franc Pacifique’, which translates to Pacific Franc Exchange.
The CFP franc, along with the CFA franc in Africa was introduced in December 1945. The reason for the creation of these francs was the weakness of the French franc following the Second World War.
The most commonly used bills for the CFP franc are the 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 notes.
