All money transfers to Thailand are subject to multiple taxation laws, with documentation required for Thailand citizens and residents receiving the transferred amount. When sending money to Thailand, different tax regulations may apply depending on:
- How the money is going to be used
- Whether the money is being used for business purposes
- How much money has been sent
- Source of the funds
- Whether the funds have been taxed in another country
The purpose of the money transfer and how it will be used will influence the amount taxed. For example, money transfers with the purpose of supporting family member living expenses is considered different to sending money as a financial gift. Since 2016, new tax regulations have affected the taxation requirements for money transfers and financial gifts in Thailand.
The amount sent will heavily impact how much of the recipient will be taxed, with new financial gifts and inheritance regulations placing a threshold on the amount of remittance that can be transferred. Penalty rates and fees may be applied to the received amount, if the recipient fails to abide by the Thailand Revenue Code4.
New regulations have affected local taxation requirements in Thailand, the amount the recipient is taxed varies depending on their residential status, amount transferred and the existing relationship between the sender and the recipient. The gift tax rate for non-related recipients is 10% and 5% for descendants or ascendants. To find out more, please visit the Thailand Revenue Department tax information page5.
