- Is Money Transferred from Australia to USA Taxable?
Recipients receiving financial gifts or payments in the US via international money transfer are not required to pay tax. Once you opt to send money from Australia to the US, the funds will not be subject to any additional tax.
The sender is required to inform the IRS if the financial gift or payments exceed the value of $15,000 USD, with each individual person allowed to gift up to $11.18 million USD tax-free over the course of their lifetime. Money transfers that are payments for living expenses are not recognised as capital gains or income and will not be additionally taxed.
If the financial gift exceeds $100,000 USD, you will be legally required in filing IRS Form 3520. 4 If the gift is from a business or partnership transaction, you will be required to notify the IRS if the transfer exceeds $15,797 USD and the sender is responsible for paying any taxes or fees associated with the transfer.
Those that are transferring money to the USA for business purposes, may be taxed if the transfer funds are recognised as taxable income. Any money earned from businesses or investments are taxed regardless of the country of origin.
