What is an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official document that complements your valid Australian driver licence by translating it into multiple languages and standardised formats. From an Australian perspective, it’s not a standalone licence as you must carry it together with your Australian licence when driving overseas.

Recognised under United Nations conventions on road traffic, an IDP helps foreign authorities, rental agencies, and insurers easily interpret your driving credentials, especially in countries where English is not widely used. While some countries may allow you to drive with just your Australian licence, many either require an IDP by law or strongly recommend it to avoid complications.

For Australians travelling abroad, an IDP is particularly useful because:

  • It reduces language barriers when dealing with local authorities or rental companies
  • It can be a legal requirement in certain countries
  • It helps ensure you’re properly covered by insurance when driving overseas
  • It provides an additional form of identification

Each IDP is valid for 12 months from the date of issue and is accepted in over 150 countries.

In Australia, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the sole authorised issuer of IDPs, and NRMA is an authorised sales agent of the AAA. Get your IDP today with NRMA and travel with confidence knowing you’re prepared to drive internationally.

International Driving Permit FAQs

  • Why do I need an International Driving Permit?

If you’re planning to drive overseas, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official document recognised by the United Nations and the Australian Government. It confirms to local authorities and car rental companies that you’re licensed to drive in Australia.

In many destinations, you may be required to carry an IDP to legally drive or rent a vehicle. While we recommend having one, requirements can vary and may change depending on local authorities and rental providers.

  • Are international driving licences the same as International Driving Permits?

No, there's actually no such licence! An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a United Nations–sanctioned document issued in accordance with the Convention on International Road Traffic of 19 September 1949. A genuine IDP will clearly reference this convention on its cover.

In Australia, IDPs are only issued through authorised State and Territory motoring clubs (as agents of the Australian Automobile Association, the official issuing body). For example, NRMA is an authorised provider in New South Wales.

Be aware that counterfeit documents may not display the required convention reference, which is a key indicator of authenticity.
