The United Arab Emirates has an open economy with a significantly high income per capita. Diversification of the UAE economy means that they rely less on their oil and gas sectors than many of their neighbouring nations.¹

The UAE offers trade-free zones that are popular with foreign investors due to these zones having no taxes imposed, and 100% foreign ownership rights.¹

While the price of oil – one of the UAE’s biggest exports – does not directly impact the dirham, fluctuations in oil prices may affect the AED to AUD exchange rate due to changes in relative valuations of the US and Australian dollars.²

UAE Dirham Historical Exchange Rate

The UAE dirham has performed rather well over the last five years, improving and then stabilising during the last three years in particular.¹

Back in October 2013, 1 AUD was buying around 3.52433 AED; in September 2014 the dirham had strengthened against the Australian dollar to 3.18661 to 1 AUD.³

In September 2015, the dirham was performing well against the Australian dollar with 1 AUD converting to 2.57675 AED.³

Staying relatively stable over time, by July 2017 1 AUD was buying 2.90813 AED. As of 25 September 2018, 1 Australian dollar would get you 2.66215 AED.³
