One Fijian dollar is divided into 100 cents, with the most common banknotes being $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. To avoid confusion with other dollar currencies, it’s often written as FJ$.

Payment options in Fiji

Payment methods in Fiji can vary depending on where you are. While major hotels, resorts and larger shops accept credit cards and travel cards, cash is still king in local markets and rural villages.

  • Perfect for: Local markets, taxis, ferries & tipping.

  • Pros: Widely accepted everywhere, especially in rural areas and the islands.

  • Cons: Harder to track spending, less secure to carry in large amounts.

Why use foreign cash?
The currency in Fiji is the Fijian dollar (FJD), and it’s the only legal tender in the country. Having cash on hand means you can pay easily in places without EFTPOS, like food stalls, remote village stores, or small boat transfers.
Cash also makes tipping hotel staff, drivers and guides simple — a valued part of Fiji’s hospitality culture.

Things to consider:

  • Pickpocketing is rare, but use the same precautions you would anywhere.
  • ATMs in remote areas can run out of cash or be temporarily offline, so withdraw when you can.

  • Perfect for: Safer travel with locked-in exchange rates.
  • Pros: Reload online, store multiple currencies, easy to replace.
  • Cons: Can’t load FJD directly, some ATM fees apply.

Why use a travel card in Fiji?
You can’t load Fiji dollars directly onto your Travelex Money Card, but you can load AUD and spend it in Fiji anywhere Visa is accepted. The AUD will convert to FJD at the daily exchange rate at the time of your transaction or withdrawal. This makes it a safer and more convenient way to manage your AUD to FJD spending without carrying large amounts of cash.

Things to consider:

  • ATM withdrawals may include a fee, so withdraw larger amounts less often.

  • Reloads can take 1–2 business days, so plan ahead.

  • Perfect for: Hotel deposits, large purchases & emergencies.
  • Pros: Convenient, widely accepted in tourist areas and cities.
  • Cons: Foreign transaction fees, not ideal for small purchases.

Why use a card in Fiji?
Most large hotels, resorts and restaurants accept major cards like Visa and Mastercard, making them great for bookings, accommodation payments, or covering unexpected costs.

Things to consider:

  • Many smaller cafés, shops, and rural businesses only take cash.

  • Minimum spends or surcharges on cards are common in smaller stores.

  • International transaction fees of 2–5% may apply, depending on your bank.
