The lowdown on the New Zealand dollar

New Zealand dollars aren’t just for NZ – you can also use them on the sunny South Pacific isles of Nauru, Niue, Tokelau, the Cook Islands and the Pitcairn Islands.

Our New Zealand neighbours have had their dollar since 1967. Before that, it was the New Zealand pound, which was made up of 20 shillings, with each shilling divided into 12 pence. Things are a lot easier these days – give us dollars and cents any day.

Before the new currency was called the New Zealand dollar, there was talk about calling it the Kiwi or the Zeal – to stop people getting confused with the other dollars out there. It does get called the Kiwi in the currency trade though, and the NZ$1 coin has a kiwi on it.

Take a look at New Zealand dollar notes and you’ll find they all have a famous New Zealander, a native bird and a picture of the islands’ epic scenery.
